Permanent Freckles
Permanent freckles are a beautiful form of cosmetic tattooing designed to create the illusion of naturally sun-kissed freckles across the skin. When thoughtfully placed and properly healed, they can add warmth, dimension, and a youthful, natural-looking appearance.
Autumn actually declined to offer freckle tattooing for many years. That changed when a close friend’s daughter, who is now a young woman, came to her wanting freckles.
She explained that she had been using a tanning bed every day to create the appearance of natural freckles. Knowing how damaging intentional UV exposure can be to the skin, Autumn agreed to create the freckles cosmetically instead.
Autumn made her a promise: as long as she stayed out of tanning beds, Autumn would continue to maintain and touch up her freckles for her. It was a way to give her the look she wanted without encouraging repeated UV exposure.
Why We Call Them Permanent Freckles
The terminology surrounding freckle tattooing can be confusing. Although the visible pigment may fade substantially within approximately six months to one year, permanent changes have been made to the skin, and a small amount of pigment may remain.
For this reason, Autumn refers to the service as permanent freckles rather than semi-permanent freckles.
Autumn specifically uses iron-oxide-based pigments for this service. Her goal is for the freckles to soften and fade naturally rather than relying on carbon-based pigments that may develop unwanted gray, blue, or ashy tones as they age.
An Important Consideration: Future Laser Treatments
Autumn is extremely conservative when it comes to freckle tattooing because she wants her clients to understand an important long-term consideration:
If you anticipate having laser treatments, IPL, laser facials, carbon laser treatments, or other light-based procedures in the future, permanent freckles may not be appropriate for you.
Certain tattoo pigments can react to laser or intense light-based treatments and may become significantly darker or otherwise change in appearance when energy is absorbed by the pigment.
This is especially important for younger clients, because your preferences may change over time. You may love freckles today and decide several years from now that you want laser resurfacing or another cosmetic laser treatment.
For that reason, Autumn carefully evaluates each client before agreeing to perform freckle tattooing. Freckles should be a thoughtful long-term decision—not an impulse purchase.
There is an exception for certain paramedical applications, such as using freckle-style pigmentation to camouflage areas of radiation-related skin changes for a breast cancer survivor.
In those circumstances, the purpose and benefits of treatment are very different, and Autumn evaluates the patient individually.
Please Protect Your Permanent Cosmetics From UV Exposure
Whether you have permanent freckles, brows, eyeliner, lip blush, or areola micropigmentation, tanning beds and excessive UV exposure can shorten the life of your cosmetic tattoo.
UV exposure can accelerate pigment fading and may mean you need touch-ups more frequently. More importantly, repeated tanning damages the skin itself.
Autumn often reminds her clients that tanning beds are age accelerators. UVA exposure penetrates deeply into the skin and contributes to the breakdown of collagen and elastin—the proteins that help maintain the skin’s structure, firmness, and youthful appearance.
Even covering your face with a towel does not provide reliable protection from UV exposure. If you are investing in permanent cosmetics, protecting that investment with daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is one of the simplest things you can do.
Autumn recommends making sun protection part of your everyday skincare routine and choosing a quality sunscreen that you will actually use consistently.
Beautiful Skin Is Part of Beautiful Permanent Cosmetics
Permanent cosmetics are an investment in your appearance, and healthy skin provides the best canvas for beautiful, long-lasting results.
If you are considering permanent freckles, Autumn will discuss your skin, your lifestyle, your future plans, and your expectations before determining whether you are a good candidate.
Her conservative approach is intentional. She would rather decline a procedure than perform a service that may create problems for a client in the future.
Beautiful freckles should enhance your appearance—not limit your future choices.
Pricing will be $500 for this service.
